A man was accidentally stabbed through the skull with an iron rod. He lived 11 more years after the accident. When Phineas Gage was a railroad worker in 1848 a bizarre accident nearly took his life. When handling explosive materials with a tool called a "tamping iron" (a 3-foot iron pole) sparks started flying. Phineas turned away for a second, just asan explosion launched the pole straight through his head.
The pointy end of the pole entered his head through the left cheekbone under his eye, wentthrough his brain, and went out through the middle of his forehead. After the pole went through his head, Phineas walked home to tell his landlord and then went to see a doctor.
Though he survived, people said that his behavior was very different after the accident. Rumor has it that Phineas appeared at famous showman P.T. Barnum's Museum, to show off his injury, carrying with him the 3 foot pole that went through his head.
